How To Download Torrents: A Step-by-Step Guide
Torrenting looks intimidating from the outside, but the whole process boils down to three things: a client, a search, and a magnet link. This guide walks through each step with screenshots, using The Pirate Bay as the example site — the same steps work on any torrent index.
1. Install a BitTorrent client
To download a .torrent file or open a magnet link, you need a BitTorrent client installed first. It handles the peer-to-peer plumbing while you just pick files.
Our recommendation is Transmission: it is free, open-source, and free of the adware that plagues many clients.
- Download Transmission for Windows, Mac, or Linux
- Get Transmission for Android (or pick another client from the Play Store)
Install it, open its settings once to confirm where downloads should land, and you are ready.
2. Find the torrent you want
Open one of the working Pirate Bay proxies from our list and type what you are looking for into the search bar. In this walkthrough we will download Ubuntu, the Linux operating system — a nice legal test case with a healthy swarm.
When several results match your search, pick the one with the most seeders — the SE column. More seeders means a faster, more reliable download.
3. Grab the magnet link
On the torrent's description page, click Get This Torrent. That link contains the magnet — the pointer your client needs to start assembling the file.
Your browser will ask whether to hand the link to your BitTorrent client. Allow it.
4. Choose a destination and start downloading
Transmission opens automatically and prompts you for a save location. Pick one you can find again, confirm, and the download begins — progress depends on your connection speed and how many peers are seeding.
If the browser does not open your client
Sometimes nothing happens when you click the magnet link. No problem — copy it manually instead:
- Right-click Get This Torrent and choose Copy link address.
- Open your BitTorrent client and go to File → Open URL (in Transmission).
- Paste the magnet link and confirm. The download starts as normal.
The flow on Android is identical even though the buttons live in different places — once you have done it once on desktop, the mobile version explains itself. And that is genuinely all there is to it: client, search, magnet.
